James King gives his thoughts on the best movies to watch this weekend on the big screen with James King's Top Movie Picks.
A Bigger Splash (15) - Admirably grown-up and steamy drama starring Tilda Swinton as a holidaying rock star whose peace is shattered when her ex-lover (Ralph Fiennes) turns up with his daughter. It's Fiennes that steals it; as terrifying as he is funny, a loud and lairy bear of a man whose presence on the serene island can only end in tears.
Deadpool (15) - For their latest assault on the cinema, superhero specialists Marvel get cheeky. X-Men spin-off Deadpool is a riot of in-jokes and subverted expectations, not to mention super-sweary and ultra-violent, where Ryan Reynolds lets his one-liners run wild. Kick-Ass did something similar first but Deadpool's budget means it gets to do it, if not better, then way bigger.
Concussion (12A) - Attempting to do for American Football what Spotlight did for the Catholic Church, Will Smith's latest is a glossy true story of fighting the system (in this case the NFL, who refused to believe their sport could be causing its players brain damage). Support from Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks and David Morse give this oomph even if the pedestrian story-telling ultimately stops Concussion from being real awards material.
